Abstract:

Statistical data on weather echoes detected by ground-based radars are becoming available. The area of detectability of a radar may be of the order of 10,000 square miles. A method was developed for finding the amount of time these echoes will spend over a smaller sub-area of arbitrary size. The method utilizes the echo-size probability function, a steering-wind probability function and an assumption of the independence of echo size and echo speed.
