Abstract:
Scientific advances cannot be made or ordered, but government funding of phenomena-oriented research can lead to new technologies and concepts which fill the gaps in recognized problem areas. While the stream from basic research to application can often be measured only on a long-term scale, the results of research can also produce immediate payoffs. The research done by Dr. D. A. Calahan under AFOSR Grant 177-63 and subsequent grants has led to almost immediate applications of value to the Department of Defense and defense-oriented industries. Dr. Calahans research in circuit theory resulted in computer programs for Analysis, Realization, and Sensitivity. Through personal interviews, telephone calls, and written communication with people who requested these programs, communication patterns and several applications were found. Dr. Calahans programs have been used for missle and satellite systems, aircraft systems, seismology, acoustics, telecommunication, education and nuclear instrumentation. The long-range results of Dr. Calahans research are yet to be seen, but his research is paying off today in solutions to design and analysis problems faced by defense-oriented industries. Author
