Abstract:
The author considers the equilibrium distribution of velocity, pressure, density and sea-surface elevation in a canal subject to a zonal wind stress. A principle result is that the diffusion of density approximately balances advective effects when the linearized perturbations are assumed to have an exponential decay with depth. The resulting characteristic thickness of the baroclinic layer is some 22 times the Ekman frictional depth. Author
