Abstract:
The submarine cable, now over 100 years old, is discussed. There are still in operation today sections of cable as old as 75 years. The conservative traditions of the art acted as a block to progress in improving the cable itself. However, there was continuous improvement in the terminal equipment, involving among other things ingenious mechanical gadgets to amplify and shape the signals and to reduce the effect of static noise. When the time came to apply vacuum tube circuits to submarine terminal equipment, it was found to be a difficult matter to replace these mechanical appliances by electrical circuits.
