Abstract:
Investigations of antenna breakdown in high-temperature air are reviewed to show significant discrepancies between theoretical results and observations. It is argued on theoretical grounds that the discrepancies are due to the temperature-dependence of the electron-molecule energy transfer rate and that the conventional theory can be modified to take account of this effect. Experimental measurements obtained in shock-heated air are presented to confirm and quantify these conclusions. The relevance of these results to antenna breakdown on reentry vehicles is discussed.
