Abstract:
Loadings on polyethylene up to 36 percent with proper ratios of chlorinated paraffin to antimony trioxide produce wire coating compounds meeting the desired levels of flame retardancy as described herein. The use of high molecular weight polyethylene improves physical characteristics of the resultant mixture. The addition of small quantities of butyl rubber to the extent of about 5.0 on the polyethylene, further improves properties so that the final compound more closely exhibits the original performance characteristics of the polyethylene resin. These compositions have been found to produce satisfactory insulation and jacket compounds. Author
