Abstract:
The properties of a class of material prepared from low-density polyethylene by compounding with carbon black and a chemical cross-linking agent and subsequent cross-linking are discussed. It is stressed that a wide range of electrical and mechanical properties may be obtained by suitable compounding varying the loading and the type of black. These properties may vary from a semiconducting material to a low loss insulator. All cured compounds are free from stress cracking and exhibit a minimum of plastic flow at elevated temperatures.
