Abstract:
Splices are discussed which offer sufficient advantages for serious consideration. In effect, they combine the better properties of mechanical closures and liquid epoxy resin into an approach impossible with either alone. In the case of the openable, reopenable and solid splices, the advantages of convenience, uniformity, appearance and abuse resistance are obtained through use of a mechanical housing. Beyond these advantages are those of the epoxy self-hardening resin which saturate, seal and unite cable to housing in a way impossible to accomplish mechanically. It is difficult to assess the relative merits of the openable and reopenable splices. Each has sufficient advantage to warrant application to existing problems. Some cable installations need rarely be disturbed, thus recommending use of the openable splice. Others may require frequent access if only for testing, thereby making the reopenable splice most economical. The reopenable splice offers the greater future adaptation to problems improved, yet lower cost cable installations, in the authors opinion. What is now the cover on the reopenable splice may become a terminal box, a loading coil or possibly a chamber to house a miniature repeater.
