Abstract:

A completely integrated system of wire and radio facilities is a must and extensive use of radio relay in the system is envisioned, but wire communication is still the backbone and workhorse of the system. There are very definite limitations on the number of usable radio channels in any given area -- but not to the amount of wire and cable that may be installed. Radio traffic can be intercepted by the enemy and transmitting sites very definitely located. The requirements for wire transmission facilities -- both local and long-haul types is increasing -- not diminishing.
