An electroluminescent display for pictorially presenting aircraft fuel and configuration status information was designed and fabricated, and performance with it was compared to performance with a conventional display panel containing comparable information. Slides of comparable configurations of the two display panels were presented to subjects for short 2 second and long 10 second exposures in a partially counterbalanced design. For the short exposure, subjects were required to report the fuel tank being monitored, its amount, the total fuel amount, and any additional status information which could be detected. It was found that additional qualitatively different information could be provided on the electroluminescent display in a smaller panel area, providing display redundancy and a pictorial relatedness to aircraft status that could not be obtained with conventional displays. The test results indicated the electroluminescent display to be generally superior to the conventional panel in terms of both errors and performance times. Times required to report the tank being monitored, the tank amount, and the total fuel amount, were all significantly less when using the electroluminescent display, and overall, fewer errors occurred although this result was not obtained on all items for which errors were obtained.
