Abstract:

The report presents a proof of the uniqueness of a parallel three-dimensional shear flow in a channel with arbitrary cross section where the speed of the flow is not less than the highest critical speed. The investigation also includes a two-dimensional analysis in which it is assumed that while the flow velocity varies with the depth, the density also depends on the depth and for this case the development leads to a formula which gives a good approximation to the highest critical speed.
