Abstract:

The pressure derivatives of the elastic constants of a single tantalum crystal have been measured at room temperature by the ultrasonic pulse-echo technique. The values are dC11dP 4.54 dCdP 1.03 dC primedP 1.01 dBSdP 3.19. The notation C C44, C prime C11 - C122, BS C11 2C123 has been used. The result expressed as the equation of state, delta VVo 0.526 x 10 to the -3 power - 0.581 x 10 to the -6 power P squared pressure in kbar, agrees with the Bridgman 1949, 30 kbar, compression result when this is corrected by using the ultrasonic coefficients of iron.
