During 1964 the Bathymetry Division of the Hydrographic Surveys Department, U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office, established three Hollerith card files for undersea feature information. One file, converted to magnetic tape in July 1966, contains alphabetical undersea names, another the locations and other pertinent information on named and unnamed minor features seamounts, etc. and the third, information on major features. The files contain the actions of the Advisory Committee on Undersea Features of the Board on Geographic Names, and are used to implement their actions in the U. S. Naval Oceanographic Offices Bottom Contour Chart Program and in various special studies. A comprehensive automated system using modifications of these three files to facilitate the preparation of Bottom Contour and other charts and studies is given. The system can be used to give a contourer advanced information on critical features of interest in the area being analyzed and hopefully improve the accuracy and quality of contours.
