Two pairs of pressure-hull models were designed to operate at a depth of 20,000 ft and to sustain 5000 cycles to depth without serious loss in structural integrity. Each model consisted of a hollow-filament, glass-reinforced plastic cylinder with two titanium hemispherical end closures. One pair of models was designed to have a safety factor of 1.5 and the other pair to have a safety factor of 2.0 the cylindrical section not including end buildups of both models in each pair was designed to have weight-to-displacement ratios of 0.58 and 0.62, respectively. One model from each pair was tested to obtain elastic strain data and the static collapse pressure. The second model from each pair was cyclic tested and then was tested to failure.
