The relaxation rates of the linearized Boltzmann equation for hard spheres are calculated for the first three angular indices by successive approximations, based on the Ritz variational principle. The first approximation shows a degeneracy between the angular indices l0 and l1 the value for l2 lies in the continuum that is known to dominate the spectrum of hard sphere molecules. It is then shown that the degeneracy is an apparent one that arises from the low order of approximation employed. In second approximation, this degeneracy is removed and the value for l2 comes to be much closer to the edge of the continuum, although it does not get out of it. Author
