CRACK PROPAGATION STUDIES OF WELDS IN TANTALUM AND COLUMBIUM SHEET

Single pass welds were prepared in 0.015-in.-thick tantalum Ta and columbium Cb sheet material by the automatic-inert-gas, nonconsummable electrode TIG process, representing best practice. Edges of the material were formed to provide filler material. Tensile and precracked sheet Charpy tests were performed. Crack propagation resistance measurements were obtained for weld centerline, heat affected zone and base metal locations. Modes of failure were obtained and categorized. Both macroscopic and microscopic examinations were made of the weld zone, heat affected zone, and base metal.
