Abstract:
In the period 1962-66, the Civil Defense Research staff at the University of Georgia has conducted ten simulated fallout shelter occupancy studies. These tests involved healthy men, women, and children, nine months through seventy-three years of age, in groups of thirty to five hundred persons, confined for periods of two days to two weeks under rather austere shelter conditions. Detailed findings of these occupancy tests have been presented in previous annual reports. The present report contains findings of the 1966 occupancy tests, as well as a synthesis of all studies to date, and the implications for research in the National Shelter Program. A research prototype Community Shelter Handbook for Untrained Management is included.
