Abstract:

An experimental and theoretical study of magnetoplasma phenomena in the multi-ellipsoid semiconductor PbTe has been carried out. These phenomena include cyclotron resonance and related effects i.e., hybrid resonance, tilted-orbit cyclotron resonance, and the dielectric anomaly as low magnetic fields, and propagating-mode effects at higher fields. In the field range 0.3 -7kG, virtually all the predicted local anisotropic effects were seen, including the previously unobserved hybrid resonance. These results are consistent with the 111 ellipsoid model for the Fermi surface of PbTe. Two Azbel-Kaner sub-harmonics were observed, as well as apparent Doppler shifts in the positions of resonances. At magnetic fields between 7 and 17kG, propagating modes manifested themselves in Fabry-Perot patterns. These patterns also exhibited Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations periodically in 1H, with amplitudes that increased with decreasing temperature. Author
