Abstract:
The preparation of cellotriose and cellotetraose from cellulose is described. The compounds were obtained as the pure alpha acetates by column chromatographic separation of the methanol soluble portion of a partial acetolyzate of cellulose. Application of 15 grams of the acetolyzate to a 6.5- by 50-centimeter silica gel column, followed by elution with benzene-ethyl acetate 11 gave 2.1 grams of alpha cellotriose hendecaacetate and 2.0 grams of alpha cellotetraose tetradecaacetate. Elution from a free-flowing column required 12 liters of irrigant and took about 4 days. Chromatographically pure crystalline cellotriose and cellotetraose were obtained by standard deacetylation procedures. Author
