Abstract:
The dispersion characteristics of 75 pc 1 micropulsation pearls are described and analyzed. The results show that these emissions are generated on field lines with equatorial intercepts between four and nine earth radii. There is a diurnal variation in the location of the propagation paths which constitute a pearl oval with nighttime pearls propagating closer to the earth at higher frequencies than daytime pearls. This pearl oval expands to lower latitudes with an increase in the bulk velocity of the solar wind. The exospheric plasma densities derived from this research are in reasonable agreement with previous ULF and VLF results, but it appears that pearls are generated primarily on very steep density gradients that may coincide with the plasmapause already detected by VLF whistlers.
