Abstract:

The current extent of our knowledge of the atmospheric structure of the intervening layer is surveyed in terms of the integrated information that model atmospheres are able to provide. A severe test of the accuracy of this knowledge is available from studies of satellite re-entry and impact predictions. By means of schematic examples, model atmospheres that are essentially only empirical correlations are contrasted with those incorporating physical relations. Their relative applicability to basic and applied studies is discussed, and attention is drawn to such convenient, but probably inappropriate features as monotonic temperature structures, simplified mesopause properties, and fixed boundary conditions.
