Abstract:

The paramagnetic resonance spectra of CaWO4Yb have been examined in single crystals grown from melts containing sodium, niobium, and no impurity for charge compensation. To varying extents all crystals showed the presence of Yb3 ions in sites with several types of local symmetry. In the sample gorwn from a melt containing a ratio of sodium to ytterbium of eight to one, approximately 71 percent of the Yb3 ions occupy sites with tetragonal symmetry. It is concluded that the structure observed in the optical spectra of this crystal may be due to Yb3 in lower symmetry sites. Author
