The report presents the findings of an investigation into the crash pulse of fixed-wing cargo aircraft and the resulting behavior of cargo restrained by load limiters. A crash pulse simulator computer program was developed that obtains acceleration-time histories at selected stations in the cargo compartment and under various crash conditions. This simulator was employed to obtain crash pulses for a wide range of input parameters, both for the CV-2 and the CV-7 Army aircraft. The resulting acceleration pulses were studied to determine a suitable spectrum of realistic pulses. The crash pulse program was subsequently modified to include a routine that would simulate cargo dynamic behavior during the crash sequence, employing the floor acceleration data as it is developed. This latter program was applied to CV-2 and CV-7 aircraft, under significant crash conditions, to obtain the dynamic response of cargo to the crash pulse.
