Stress-strain measurements on dry rubbers are not a good method of characterising ethylene-propylene vulcanisates. Similar measurements on rubbers swollen to equilibrium in n-heptane show excellent agreement with the requirements of the kinetic theory of rubberlike elasticity in both tension and compression, and therefore represent the best means of determining the elastic constant directly. A single point method was developed for evaluating the elastic constant in compression. Existing methods of analysing compression modulus data are shown to be unsuitable for the EP vulcanisates covered by the present work. Author
