Abstract:

Characteristics of filmless methods of bond inspection for large diameter motors are presented. High energy radiation after traversing the bond area of a motor impinges on a sodium iodide crystal, which transforms the radiation intensity into a light pattern. This image on the crystal is scanned with an optical scanning system. A photomultiplier converts the light to an electrical signal, which is then displayed on an oscilliscope. Limitations of the system due to the relatively poor image formation ability of a scintillating crystal are given. Data are presented on detectable slit sizes using a 10 Mev betatron and 14 inches of low atomic number materials. Author
