Abstract:

Correcting codes are used widely for increasing the reliability of communications equipment and digital computers. If the errors do not exceed a certain magnitude, the system does the correcting however, the reliability emphasis is shifted to the correcting filter, and a defect in the filter may introduce additional perturbations. The present article proposes a method for increasing the reliability of the correcting filters and other devices by means of secondary internal coding. The required design redundancy is moderate compared with complete duplication. During the wearing-out process spare components are introduced only for those components which actually went out of operation. The article also discusses the self-diagnosis of possible failures and their self-repair. Mechanical repairs can be avoided by introducing learning matrices and the learning process leads to the establishment of contacts between appropriate bushbars. Author
