Abstract:
For a polydentate complex chelate a steric arrangement of the coordinating group in space produces a strong effect on log kn and n. The compound with a higher charged central ion e.g. Ti4 shows linear change but the compound with a lower charge central ion e.g. Co2 and Ni2 shows a nonlinear relationship between log kn and n. The result still could not be explained because lambda could not be calculated from the dipole moment of a coordinating group or the electrical charge of coordinating atoms in complex ions. However, the nonlinear relationship for the chelates could be shown by the semiempirical equation log k2 log k1 -2lambdan sq-1. Author
