Abstract:
A number of experimental models of a radial injection cathode for electrostatic focusing were built and tested. The most successful of these models gave a transmission efficiency of about 70 at low perveances. The highest perveance model gave a maximum of 30 transmission. A theoretical description has been developed for the focusing of a hollow spiraling electron beam which indicates the limits on this technique. It also gives design information on injection requirements. A computer study was made of the potential in the injection region in the absence of space charge. A computer study was also made of beam trajectories in the electrostatic focusing region under a variety of injection conditions. A computer study was begun of a simplified cathode injection area including the motion of emitted electrons and space charge effects. Author
