Abstract:

A report is given of some of the results gleaned from an extensive paleomagnetic survey of the Russian and Siberian Platforms. The almost complete cross-sections of all of the stratigraphic systems of the Paleozoic which were covered made possible to obtain new and more complete data on the variations of the geomagnetic field at a number of points, and on its distribution in the geologic past. The resulting data are applied to the questions of field inversions in the Paleozoic, the distribution of the field in the geologic past, and horizontal movements of the earths crust. The second paper reports the results of a paleomagnetic investigation of the Upper Cambrian and Ordovician deposit in riverbank outcrops of the southern Siberian Platform. The data obtained are applied to the problem of wether the geomagnetic field of the remote past was of dipole character. The results do indicate the presence of a central axial dipole character of the field in the time and place under consideration.
