The Czochralski growth technique was developed to yield large ruby crystals with optical quality suitable for use as solid state lasers. This involved a scale-up of the present growth process to produce crystals 2 inches in diameter and 12 inches long. The material properties of the ruby have been studied with special attention given to its behavior during active lasing. The properties receiving attention have been chromium distribution and the identification and removal of inclusions causing laser damage during Q-switched operation.
