The effects of alkyl nitrate-type cetane improvers on Military and Federal specification requirements of diesel-type fuels were investigated. The presence of these alkyl nitrates was found to adversely affect specific test requirements as a result of their thermal instability which initiated oxidation-polymerization reactions. Subsequent evaluations, which necessitated the development of an accelerated screening technique for determining relative thermal stability, indicated that cyclohexyl nitrate exhibited the least resistance towards thermal stability under these static test conditions. In addition, there were indications that under conditions of accelerated storage, the quality of diesel fuel may be altered by the additions of these alkyl nitrates. Author
