At all stages of his scientific activity, Ambartsumyan paid particular attention to the problems of the origin and development of the stars and stellar systems. In his works on the statistical mechanics of stellar systems and the physics of non-stationary stars, he found the first clues regarding the changes in the stars and stellar systems. Subsequent research by Ambartsumyan in 1947 led to a fundamental discovery concerning the existence, in the Galaxy and in the outer spiral galaxies, of a new type of stellar systems, which he called stellar associations. The theory of stellar association formulated by Ambartsumyan and based on study of these systems proved to be very productive. The most important result of this theory which is of great scientific and universal significance is the firmly established conclusion that the process of star formation in the Galaxy still continues. Extremely important also is the conclusion concerning the group characteristics of the process of star formation in associations, in the form of multiple stars, stellar chains, and open star clusters. Particularly important to science was the introduction of the concept regarding multiple stars of the Trapezium of Orion type and stellar chains, which are dynamically unstable formations.
