Abstract:

Two cast-steel valves, removed from the main steam lines of the former German destroyers Z-37 and Z-39, were subjected to gradually increased hydrostatic pressure until excessive leakage occurred at pressures of 2200 psi and 2300 psi, respectively. The highest stresses observed at the maximum applied pressures were less than one third of the assumed proportional limit of the valve material. Maximum principal stresses computed from strains measured at several points on the external surfaces of the valve bodies are plotted against applied hydrostatic pressures. Author
