In investigations of stability, the assumption that the reaction of the oil film is independent of the speed of the center of the journal is frequently employed. The author solved the problem of determining the forces in a gas film, which arise in the case of disturbed journal movement. The circumferential components of these forces are determined on the basis of the expression for the determining factor of the gas lubricant. The radial components are computed by an approximate solution of the differential equation describing the forward motion of the journal. The Trefts method is used in the solution. After substitution of the forces in the motion equation, a characteristic equation is written, which is studied for stability by the Raus-Gurvits method. An instability zone boundary diagram is presented in dimensionless eccentricity load angle coordinated.
