The problem of determining the Mach number distribution required to maintain a specified wall shear in a boundary layer for a given initial shear profile is treated by solving the Crocco equation in the compressible case. The temperature of the free stream is assumed to be much higher than that of the wall. It is found that analytic solutions are readily obtainable if there is no discontinuity specified in the shear at the wall. To illustrate the method an initial profile typical of injection profiles was adopted and Mach number distribution found for a specified reduction in wall shear and for constant wall shear. Corresponding downstream shear profiles were computed and the similarity profile in the case of constant shear was found. Author
