Abstract:

The research was directed toward a more fundamental understanding of charge and mass transport mechanisms in refractory metal oxides. Special research apparatus and instrumentation was developed in order to carry out the experimental program. The results of a study of the defect structure of Y2 O3 and HfO2 are reported. Measurable weight changes were observed in HfO2 enabling an estimate of the mobility and the energy of motion, as well as the concentration of the defect, to be made. Some thermoluminescence results obtained on Y2 O3 single crystals are reported. A procedure is described for preparing thin foils for transmission electron microscopy which combines the best features of several well known techniques. Author
