A prototype of a sonar tube capable of generating several times the power requested was developed. Life tests show that the operating conditions are compatible with adequate life even at these high power levels. Advantages of such a tube over tubes presently used are 1 Highly increased reliability because of the absence of grid emission - shorts - characteristic drift - cathode poisoning. 2 Non-brittle cathode for long life and insensitivity to large line voltage fluctuations. 3 Tetrode characteristics without the need for a separate screen supply. 4 Low drive power and very high efficiency. 5 Cool tube operation simple conduction cooling possible. 6 Tube more rugged by an order of magnitude than any existing electron tube. Compared with semi-conductors, the Field Effect Tube offers the following advantages 1 Inexpensive. 2 One unit for full power. 3 Conduction cooling possible. 4 Insensitive to wide variations of load impedance. 5 Transient overload capability.
