A study was undertaken to define and analyze the factors controlling the catalytic activity of platinum black toward the anodic oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons. The objective was to develop a correlation between the physical characteristics of a black, which should be a function of the preparation technique, and its electrochemical activity. The pattern of the work was as follows 1 the preparation of many samples of platinum black over a wide range of carefully controlled conditions 2 the characterization of the black 3 the preparation of a practical electrode structure 4 electrochemical activity testing a over-all activity steady state measurement, b intrinsic activity transient measurement.
