Abstract:

Automatic data processing techniques developed for reduction of data returned by the Flight Experiment Shielding Satellite FESS experiment from the OV1-2 spacecraft are presented. Computer programs are discussed which accept data from digital magnetic tapes, remove instrument calibrations and temperature effects, organize and list the data, and electronically plot selected parameters. Experiment performance is reviewed all instruments have operated in excess of nine months in orbit. Proton and electron spectrums are presented, and significant differences from the Vette grids are found for some regions of space. Results of theoretical dose calculations using Vette grids and experimental FESS particle data are presented, and are compared with measured doses in the spacecraft, and influencing factors are discussed. Unidirectional flux grids in B, L space for typical L-shells are presented. General recommendations are presented for further analyses of the data, taking into consideration the generally poor quality of the digital data tapes available for processing. Author
