Through a comparative discussion on the various proposed formulas for the evaluation of total radiation, the present study confirms the general validity of the expressions Q Q0 fS1, n and Q S0 phiS1, n. The physical significance of the coefficient K in the Savinov-Angstrom formula and the related factors are discussed. A reason is offered to explain the fact that the sum of the percentage duration of sunshine and the average total cloud amount is not equal to 1 under conditions experienced in China. The annual variation of this entity is analyzed. The monthly and daily mean values of total radiation are computed from sunshine records at the various stations in China for the years 1958 - 1960. Empirical expressions for the direct radiation S and scattered radiation D are determined with a view to satisfying the requisite condition that Q S D. The accuracy in the determination of each entity in this expression is examined in the light of their functional dependence. Author
