Abstract:

A survey has been conducted on the use of underground, walk-through tunnels for utility systems. Results of this survey indicate that this concept has been successfully and extensively employed at universities and Government installations but is not commonly used in cities. There appears to be no set criteria or design for utility tunnels, and an optimization of the parameters is needed. Since many parallels exist between institutions and expected urban renewal projects, extrapolation of the utility tunnel concept to these projects appears worthwhile. Modifications to utility tunnels to incorporate civil defense shelter space appear possible, but further design studies are required. Author
