Abstract:
The report presents the results of a study undertaken to develop a container that would maintain biologicals in the temperature range of 35-50F for a period of at least ten days without external refrigeration. Utilizing thermodynamic principles, a relatively inexpensive 4.00 expendable package was designed. This container, a fiberboard box, encloses 6 inches of insulation, and utilizes 40 pounds of water ice in a plastic bag as refrigerant. Two containers were concurrently developed to maintain frozen biologicals below 30F 1 For two days protection - a 14 x 14 x 9 in. container utilizing a quarter block of dry ice 11-23 pounds - a saving of 1.35 cubic feet and 18-13 pounds of dry ice over the one presently used. 2 For three days protection - a 14 x 14 x 12 in. container with a half block of dry ice 22 pounds - a saving of 1.01 cubic feet and 36-23 pounds of dry ice.
