Abstract:

An optical Cerenkov system has been used to set upper flux limits for gamma-rays from possible sources, in the energy region 10 to the 13th power eV. 13 possible sources were examined the quasars 3C9, 3C48, 3C147, 3C196, 3C273, 3C286 the Crab Nebula, magnetic variables HD71866 and 53 Cam and the Galaxies Cygnus A, M31, NGC4472 and 160726. The quasar results when summed show a slight positive effect approaching significance for 3C147. Non-quasar sources showed no effect. A theory of the angular distribution of light from showers is discussed, and an image intensifier system for shower photography described. A wide-band receiver was used to detect pulses in coincidence with shower particles. The rate of pulses indicates significant decoherence at 70 Mcs. Correlation was found between optical Cerenkov and radio pulses. Preliminary results are presented for a long distance coincidence experiment, using pure radio detection. Author
