Abstract:
An investigation was made of the diffusion bonding of titanium alloys in particular, the alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The accomplishments of the first quarter of the program are as follows A test program was initiated to examine the relation of bond strength to temperature, time, static load, and surface conditions. Vacuum bonding apparatus was assembled and tested. A physics program was initiated to isolate and study separately the variables involved in bonding. As a first step, methods of determining activation energies and diffusion coefficients for oxygen and nitrogen in Ti-6Al-4V are being examined. A tentative mathematical model was formulated which treats the bonding process as a first order reaction rather than a complex transport process. The preliminary nature of the results must be emphasized. Author
