Abstract:

Observations are reported concerning the decay of O ions in helium-oxygen mixtures over the approximate temperature range 200 - 600K and in helium-oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at 300K. From these observations, values for k sub O and k sub N, the rate coefficients for the reaction of O ions with molecular oxygen and molecular nitrogen respectively, were obtained. The values at 300K are k sub O 2.0 0.4 or -0.3 x 10 to the -11th powerccsec k sub N 2.4 plus or minus 0.4 x 10 to the -12th powerccsec. Over the temperature range 200 - 600K, k sub O is shown to be related to the temperature by the equation k sub O 3.5 x 10 to the -10th power T to the -12 powerccsec. These results are compared with measurements obtained by other workers and the ionospheric implications of these results are discussed. Author
