Abstract:

The objective is the development of sensitive instrumentation for the study of low density hypersonic flows with particular emphasis on the transitional and near free molecule regimes. Modulated hot wire probes show a change in sensitivity of less than 10 over several days operation. Earlier results indicating large changes were shown to be spurious and were due to contamination of the wires by vacuum pump oil. A model actuator operating in the region of 15 Hz was constructed and successfully tested under vacuum conditions. The actuator is the essential component in planned experiments on first collision effects. Preliminary studies of the magnetohydrodynamic measurement of local velocity by means of the Faraday effect indicate qualitative agreement with theory. Author
