Abstract:

Since the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis has been found in wild rats in the Philippines, snails which are a known intermediate host were studied to determine the prevalence of larvae of the parasite. The snails were digested, the larvae were removed and fed to weanling laboratory rats. After a suitable maturation period the rats were sacrificed and examined for the presence of A. cantonensis. Larvae were found in 56 of 62 snails examined. All of the larvae found were in 3 genera of snails including Achatina fulica, Hemiplecta sagittifera and Helicostyla macrostoma. Larvae removed from the genera were fed to 11 rats. Completion of the life cycle was demonstrated in all but one of the rats. Author
