The submarine medical literature contains reports of increased gingivitis incidence among submarine crews. This study was instituted because no studies had been conducted in FBM submarine crews to see if the isolated patrols resulted in an increase of gingivitis, as the literature would indicate. A second phase of this study was an attempt to influence the oral hygiene in a group randomly selected from the observed crew. This experimental group was given a routine Navy-type hygiene lecture and demonstration. Results indicate actual overall improvement in gingival health during patrol. No additional decrease in gingivitis incidence was seen in the experimental group that received the oral hygiene instruction. Author
