An analytical review is given of the 1966 political upheavals in Indonesia which resulted in the replacement of the Sukarno government with a government lead by MinisterArmy Commander Suharto. A central question is why, considering the rather firm Sukarno-Communist Party alliance, the Communists were ruthlessly disposed of while considerable delicacy was exercised by Suharto in liquidating the Sukarno regime. Attention is given to the history of Sukarnos Communist affiliations and his alienation of important elements of the military leadership the pre- and post-coup activities of the Pantja Sila Front and student Generation of 1966, and their relationships with the dissident military Sukarnos attempts to recapture the government the post-coup trials the reactivation of certain democratic institutions and the internal politics of the new order economic problems and readjustments of post-Sukarno Indonesia.
