Yielding perovskites such as SrZrO3, CaZrO3 and BaTiO3 exhibit less notch sensitivity than was expected. A considerable amount of yield, without increase in stress, was observed in notched strontium zirconate samples having some porosity. It is speculated that free surface, increased by the flaws introduced by the notch and by the presence of some porosity, permitted uninhibited domain motion in grains exposed to that surface. It was observed that domain motion in perovskites under mechanical stress may be influenced by more than crystallographic shear angle. The defect structure in terms of the A cation and oxygen vacancies may affect both domain crystallography and the ease of domain motion. Iron was found to be a most useful addition to promote sintering in strontium zirconate.
